There are games for the kids, a cake walk and a auction where Quilts go for as much as $1,000 and a dozen Kolaches can fetch $100! If you haven't heard of or had a Kolache you are in for a treat! Its a pastry that holds fruit and they are crazy good. While we were there I photographed my sister and her family and capturing the relationship they have with their kids which was the best part of the trip...aside from homemade pickles and kolaches!
Enjoy...

One little town surrounding Bastrop is Smithville,TX where we had a amazing family to photograph with the cutest little girl which i'm totally biased b/c my wife is her nanny (cajun Godmother)! We made a entire day out of it by fishing, photography and having dinner in Smithville.
Not only did we take a family portrait, but we had two conceptual ideas: one with a old Scout International/old fishing pole and the other with a really cute bathing suit, bubbles and a rustic bucket. Looooove shoots like this and can't wait for her to turn one!

After a good old fashioned butt kicking by UHO on Saturday night, I congratulated the coach and said I look forward to seeing them in Laredo at the Regional Tournament. He then told me he didn't know if they could make it b/c many parents simply couldn't afford to go. I told him a couple of us were in the same boat and we planned on camping at a state park in Laredo.
Long story short: a parent on our team had the same conversation with the head coach, sent a email to everyone wishing there was something we could do and our pitcher against UHO (who gave up 10 runs) got on his phone and texted as many people he could and raised $500 and his dad had secured a sizable donation by Wal-Mart. The pitcher then called the UHO coach and told him is entry fee was taken care of.
Everyone on this team is moved, motivated and touched. I have never teared up so many times in one day since watching "The Notebook". JUST KIDDING!!
The response has been overwhelming and a paypal account has been setup if you so desire.

Fly by the seat of your pants.
Be prepared for anything.
Weather, lighting and equipment malfunction are all part of photography. I can plan for and choose a location only to have a truck pull into the background as soon as I begin to shoot. The beauty of the situation is being resourceful, using your own initiative and perceptions along with a pre-determined plan. During an amazing wedding Sunday, one of my flashes just stopped working! I spent a couple of minutes checking batteries, connections and turning it on and off. Dead. I threw it in the bag, grabbed on of my backup flashes and kept shooting. Before the ceremony I raised my flash up high, it hit a ceiling fan, broke an attachment, grabbed a backup and kept shooting!
Backup plan...Check!
Will be more careful with a flash in a room with a ceiling fan when you are 6' 3"... Check!
BTW here are some pics from the wedding! Congrats Brittany and Sean!

In April 2012 two friends pitched in and bought me a month membership to CSC Combine Crossfit in Austin, TX and I never stopped going. Since then I have shed 10-15lbs and lost 1-2% body fat. Old injuries in my lower back, knees and wrists have never felt better. I feel lighter, faster and def. stronger than ever....which in turn does wonders for the mentally/physically demanding world of photography.
Last week I photographed my coaches and fellow athletes for CSC's website. I have big plans for photographing other Crossfit affiliates so stay tuned if you own a box!
Enjoy!

So why on earth would you need photo tips?! Because a pot doesn't cook dinner by itself!
1-Have a iphone? Who doesn't these days! Don't just point and shoot...touching the screen on the important subject like a baby or a flower will do two things: focus and get a better exposure. Click away!
2-Wait for that moment. So your little baseball player just scored a home run huh? Got a shot of them hitting, running and crossing home plate? The real shot is the emotion when they are celebrating the home run with their teammates . Always be ready and anticipate the emotional moments too!
3-Let there be light! Turn that flash on! Wether its inside or out, chances are you could use a little extra light. Try some with or without the flash or grab a margarita!
4-Create a sense of depth. Taking a pic of a landscape scene? Add your husband, wife, kids, or pet...anything that helps the viewer feel like they are there and gives depth/scale to the scene.
5-Last but certainly not the last of many tips to come. Download-Pick out the keepers-DELETE the ones you don't need/want. Consider it taking out the trash. Computers can only hold a certain amount of music and photos and even a 12 megapixel point and shoot can fill up a 1TB hard drive quickly. Or grab a margarita!
Happy shooting!

I'm not a big race fan nor do I keep up with current models of Ferrari's or Lamborghini's, but everytime I step on a racetrack or speedway I feel like a kid in a candy store. Needless to say when I first heard F1 was coming to Austin I couldn't wait for opening day. This past Saturday was the first time for me to photograph and see F1 cars....It was so technical, powerful and fast I'm def. hooked on F1 racing now!
Here is one of the shots of the 2012 Austin Grand Prix winner Lewis Hamilton on a qualifying round Saturday.
Enjoy!
P.S. Thanks for the tix Chris!

Then the area I love the most: Creativity. Out of the 300,000+ images I've captured, it's time to get creative and figure out how I can photograph your newborn child, high school senior, wedding flowers, amazing kids or family in a way that is unique and creative to the other millions of amazing photos taken each day.
That's exactly why photography is challenging, unique, creative, fun, amazing and most of all a passion.

We had an amazing shoot and once I realized the bride is a trainer at Seaworld I had to ask to bring our kids and let them meet her. After a couple of weeks of planning around vacations and photo-shoots we picked a day and it was one the kids (or us) will never forget.
There are a couple of things: Yes the water is cold. They are big.. like 6,000+ pounds big. They know over 200 commands and love ice. Did I mention they are huge!?
The video below is of her showing Kellie and the kids hand signals to killer whales. Wow.
Thanks Katie!!

As we wait out a rain storm in Destin, FL I wanted to share some pics from a recent road trip to Granger TX. We photographed in a beautiful creekside pecan grove and around main street Granger where a little film called True Grit was recently filmed. Its amazing how they can transform a modern Texas town to emulate a old west town. Then again give me producers, costumes, designers, carpenters, grips and about 1/2 million bucks and presto...the old west. Ok it wouldn't be that easy but it sure would be fun to watch!
Thanks guys for allowing me to photograph your amazing family!

This interview regarding teaching photography and film basically sums him up:
“It was honorable. It was noble. It kept me young. It satisfied my craving for an audience. I was funny; tough; fair—and I knew my subject inside and out. I was fulfilled. Proud."
He will be missed here on earth but his teachings are still with me today every time I take a photograph.

My wife and I spent spring break at Big Bend National Park and we are feeling rejuvenated and ready for spring weddings, family portraits and being outside with the kids and Beaux! I've been photographing Big Bend since 1992 and the vastness, beauty, solitude and sheer size never ceases to amaze me. Some of my favorite places out there are Boquillos Canyon, The Hot Springs, Rio Grande Villiage, Chisos Basin, Santa Elena Canyon and of course the Starlight Theatre & La Kiva in Terlingua (outside of the park). Enjoy the pics!
It was a pleasure meeting everyone and can't wait to get back out there!
Special thanks to Elaine, Steve, Donna and Sue!

There are so many choices it can be very overwhelming, but if you narrow it down to two things your decision can be much easier:
1-Do you want a camera in your back pocket or purse? Get a point and shoot (smaller camera).
2-Do you want a camera that requires it's own bag? Get a DSLR (looks like a 35mm camera).
Each has it pros and cons, but the largest difference is going to be image quality, so do a little research at places like www.dpreview.com or www.the-digital-picture.com. After you have compared sharpness, purple fringing, shutter lag and drooled over your final decision, stop by a camera shop (not Best Buy, or Target or Walmart) to get a feel for focusing, shutter lag (or lack of) and how the camera feels in your hands.
Good luck and have fun shooting!
